Bricks and masonry are often considered to have a high level of embodied energy but they are a versatile and durable building material with excellent life cycle performance, energy efficiency and high thermal mass.
In measuring sustainability the whole life cycle performance of a material must be taken into account. Bricks and masonry are designed with the longest possible life span: the average brick building lasts 150 years.
