Shadwell DLR Station
As part of the Docklands Light Railway revitalization of the DLR network Shadwell Station was
earmarked as a site in need of regeneration. DLR hoped that the improved new design by
bere:architects would encourage local people to use the DLR as well as offering a catalyst for more
investment in the local area.
The redesign is intended to make the station easier to use and safer for travellers. The scheme
included widening and refurbishment of the existing arches to improve natural lighting and access.
The widening was accomplished by creating a steel picture-frame within the arch; the frame was prestressed
to negate dead load deflection. The deflection constraints imposed by Railtrack were 4mm;
Rodrigues Associates’ design was keep to within 1mm.
