Clifton Crossing Competition
Project outline
The University of Bristol posed the question “How do you bridge the gap?” to inspire entries to the Clifton Crossing Competition, a rerun of the original 1831 Clifton crossing competition.
The aim of the competition was to connect present day professional engineers, architects and designers, the general public, and especially young people, to each other and to Brunel through producing their own designs to rival Brunel’s iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge.
It was run as one of the many events celebrating the 200th birthday of Isambard Kingdom Brunel.
The Challenges
Mervyn Rodrigues teamed up with Phil Coffey Architects to design a bridge that would utilize cutting edge technology in it’s construction and be as inspiring and iconic as the Brunel bridge designed in 1831.
Our Solutions
The final competition submission was structured as a kind of travel log and included a post card ‘mock-up’ purchased at the site of the bridge and posted to a daughter with an excited account of the visit, and a travel journal entry showing Mervyn’s sketched ideas for the structural design.
