Alpha House
A post WWII bungalow will be replaced with a new-build house, open-plan and sensitively designed to
be low-lying in area of national geological importance. Perched at the top of a shingle ridge facing
Winchelsea Beach in East Sussex, the site is ecologically complex. Winchelsea Beach consists of
two shingle ridges believed to comprise part of the Dungeness shingle complex: one on the foreshore
and the second, known as The Ridge, about 500m from the foreshore with flat wetlands and
grasslands between.
Rodrigues Associates are working closely with Spaced Out Architects to provide the means to build
the house with no internal structural walls and a full undercroft requiring clear span floors. Stability
will be provided by perimeter timber framed walls.
