Olympic Studios
The famous Olympic Studio in Barnes was sold last year to a local resident and exciting new
developments have been designed for the site by Henley Halebrown Rorrison Architects. The new
owner has decided to retain the building’s unique history by returning the studio building to its former
glory as a thriving local cinema; Olympic Cinema is due to open in 2011. The remainder of the land,
which is currently a playing field, will be used to build a new family home for the owner with
surrounding gardens.
Olympic Cinema will have two cinema auditoriums; the existing main auditorium roof will be dropped
to allow office space to be incorporated above the two new cinemas.
The private house will be designed to sensitively respond to the local historic buildings and ‘village’
whilst meeting the needs and aspirations of a growing family.
The new building will be set within a series of walled gardens which will be linked front and back
through the house; these are in turn linked by a number of smaller courtyard gardens. Rodrigues
Associates has the challenge of meeting requirements for the design but also those for the
Environment Agency which has strict flood guidelines for the area. Design must provide for flood
water levels to be at existing ground levels thus requiring the basement and sunken garden to be
water retaining, whilst preventing uplift from any rising water levels.
